Hemp

An agricultural crop grown across Europe, used in body care mainly as seed oil or as an extract of the aerial parts.
What is it?
Hemp is a variety of Cannabis sativa L. grown for fibre, seed and extracts. In the European Union, hemp cultivation is regulated and only approved varieties may be grown.
In cosmetics, hemp usually appears in one of two ways: cold-pressed hemp seed oil, or an extract taken from the aerial parts of the plant.
Why we use it
Hemp seed oil is a light, fast-absorbing carrier oil that blends easily with other botanical oils and butters.
It is widely used as a base for balms, creams and massage oils because of its texture and its long history in body care formulation.
Where it is found
On ingredient lists, look for Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil (the pressed seed oil) or Cannabis Sativa Extract.
The two are different materials, and a product can contain one without the other.
