CBD product formats explained
Balm, cream, oil — what the format actually changes.
CANNAEAST Editorial · Published 22 January 2026 · Updated 22 January 2026 · 4 min read
Short answer
Format mainly changes texture, absorption speed and the area a product suits. Balms are dense and targeted; creams spread further; oils suit massage.
Balms
A balm has no water phase: it is oils and butters. That makes it dense, long-lasting on the skin and well suited to small, specific areas.
Creams
A cream is an emulsion of oil and water. It spreads further, absorbs faster and feels lighter, which makes it practical for arms, legs and larger areas.
Oils
A body oil is fluid and slow to absorb by design, which is exactly what you want for massage or for sealing in moisture after a shower.
