How to choose a balm
What separates one balm from another once you look past the label.

Short answer
Compare the base oils and butters, the presence of any warming or aromatic ingredients, the container format and the fill size.
The base decides the feel
Balms are mostly base. A formula heavy on butters will feel firmer and sit longer on the skin; one heavier on liquid oils will spread more easily.
The botanicals are a separate decision
A formula built around arnica and comfrey extract behaves differently from a plain base. As with any new product, a patch test on a small area first is sensible.
Jar or tin
A tin travels. A jar holds more. Neither is better — it depends on where the product will actually live.
